Westport Language School Supports Language Learners of All Ages as “Say Yes to Languages” Program Evolves

The “Say Yes to Languages” (SYTL) program, an initiative to increase foreign language education and awareness, is evolving for the 2025/26 academic year. Westport Language School is highlighting its key role in local language education as the module moves into a new phase. With 72 primary schools in Mayo participating, and Westport Language School teaching in over 20 of them, the school is making a significant contribution to fostering a love for languages in the county.

The program, which was a part of the broader Languages Connect strategy, previously targeted pupils from 3rd to 6th class. However, as it enters Phase 2, it is being offered exclusively to 5th and 6th class pupils for a ten-week term. This shift reinforces the need for ongoing language support outside of the school setting to ensure lasting benefits.

“The ‘Say Yes to Languages’ program is a fantastic starting point for children,” says Douglas Whittaker, founder of Westport Language School. “We’re thrilled to be on the ground in so many of Mayo’s participating schools, helping to make language learning fun. However, with the programme now focused on only 5th and 6th class for a limited ten-week period, there’s a clear need for continuous learning. True confidence and fluency are built over time, and we’re here to provide that pathway for learners of all ages.”

With approximately 160 primary schools in County Mayo, less than half are currently taking advantage of the government grant provided through the program. Douglas Whittaker encourages more schools to seize this opportunity and sign up, reminding them that the government grant will cover the cost of the classes.

For older students, the benefits of language learning are also crucial for their future. A third language is an important matriculation requirement for many degree programs at National University of Ireland (NUI) colleges (UCD, UCC, Maynooth, and Galway), particularly for courses in Arts, Human Sciences, Law, Social Science, and Commerce.

Westport Language School offers fun and engaging online classes for all primary school children, building on the foundations laid in the classroom. They also provide online grinds in Irish, Spanish, and French for secondary school students, helping them prepare for exams, as well as classes for adults.

“Our online classes are particularly beneficial for families and individuals across Mayo,” adds Whittaker. “They provide high-quality, professional tuition without the need for travel, making it easier to fit language learning into a busy schedule. It’s about making language learning accessible and enjoyable for everyone in the county, regardless of where they live or what their goals are.”

By supporting learners from primary school right through to adulthood, Westport Language School is not just participating in a national programme—it’s helping to build a more multilingual community right here in Mayo.
